What to do after an opioid overdose

You have administered the dose (or multiple doses) of Narcan and the victim is breathing again. Your work is done, right? Not quite.

Review the steps below to find out what you should do after an opioid overdose.

1
Stay with the victim
Overdose symptoms can return, so you will need to remain with the victim until Emergency Services arrive.
2
Place into the recovery position
As the victim begins to breathe again, gently place them on their side. Cross their top leg and arm over their body to help prevent choking.
3
Administer more Narcan, if needed
It is completely safe to administer multiple doses of Narcan, especially if the victim’s overdose symptoms return. Wait 2-3 minutes before administering consecutive doses.
