When you’re out camping this summer, passing along our traditions, or just enjoying a small backyard bonfire, keep these 10 campfire safety tips in mind.
- First, make sure it’s legal to light a campfire in your area. Check the fire danger forecast online or call your local fire department to see if a campfire or bonfire is even allowed.
- Don’t start a fire on a dry or windy day. Dry and windy conditions are a ripe setting for fires getting out of control.
- Don’t use gas or another flammable or combustible liquid on a fire to get it started or to keep it going.
- Keep the fire at LEAST 25 feet away from any object or structure that can burn, especially any vegetation—like overhanging branches or shrubs.
- Clear away any dry leaves, grass or sticks from that 25-foot area.
- Don’t leave kids or pets unattended around the fire.
- A responsible adult should be keeping an eye on the fire at all times.
- Keep the fire small so it’s easier to control.
- Have a hose, bucket of water, or shovel and dirt or sand nearby to put out the fire.
- Extinguish the fire completely before leaving the site.
Sitting around the bonfire can be a relaxing time with friends and family. But if you don’t respect it, it can start a wildfire. Stay safe this year by following the campfire safety tips above.
