Earth-Friendly Powwow Travel

Powwow season’s in full swing! Now is the time to keep our travels in close connection with all living things. As Chief Qwatsinas of the Nuxalk Nation has said, “We protect the forests for those who can’t speak for themselves, such as the birds, animals, fish, and trees.”

Did you know the travel industry uses a lot of energy? And the form of transportation that uses the most energy? Flying. If you’re able to drive, take the train, or even a bus to powwows this year, those are much more earth-friendly options.

Here are eight environmentally friendly ways to attend powwows:

  1. If you have to fly, minimize your stops. Takeoff and landing consume nearly half of the gasoline used on a flight. Aim for that non-stop flight when possible.
  2. If you have to drive, carpool. Gas costs a billion dollars right now. Instead of taking separate vehicles, fill up those car seat belts with family and friends.
  3. Take the train or bus. Per passenger, trains and buses use much less energy than flying.
  4. Camp instead of staying in hotels. Not only does it save you hundreds of dollars, you get to enjoy the benefits of camping, like passing along our traditions to the next generation.
  5. Bring your own water bottle. The pandemic has led to an increased demand on single-use plastic containers, like water or soda bottles. Save money and stay healthier by bringing your own refillable water bottle.
  6. Dine and shop local. Eat from vendors who cook with locally-sourced ingredients and use minimal packaging. And buy from artists and makers who create items locally.
  7. Conserve electricity. If you’re staying in a hotel, cut down on the air conditioning while you’re out at the powwow. And just like you would at home, turn off the lights and other electronics when not in use.
  8. Leave no trace. Respect the planet by leaving objects the way you found them and properly dispose of any garbage.

When all the trees have been cut down,
when all the animals have been hunted,
when all the waters are polluted,
when all the air is unsafe to breathe,
only then will you discover you cannot eat money.
