As the cold weather settles over much of the nation, nothing sounds better than driving away the chilly winter blues with a bowl of your favorite soup! Take this month, National Soup Month, to revisit an old recipe you haven’t made in forever, or a new one you’ve been hoping to try! What’s more? The recipe you choose can be a nutritious meal that includes ingredients from every food group.
If you need an idea to begin, Three Sisters Soup is a fan-favorite and is delicious as it is nutritious. Referring to the three main crops in Indigenous gardens, the soup combines corn, squash and beans altogether in one mouth-watering dish. Although there’s a list of reasons why we love it, the first might be its simplicity. Anyone can cook it!
Ingredients include:
- Butter
- Chicken or vegetable stock
- Onion
- Garlic
- Butternut or acorn squash
- Curry powder
- Salt
- Corn kernels

Other reasons why we love soup (besides the ease of making it) are plentiful.
For those with picky eaters at home, you can disguise any leafy greens that youngsters tend to pick away at. For those who enjoy versatility, soups can be made as an appetizer, side dish or even the main course.
If cooking isn’t quite your thing, you can still do your part in celebrating National Soup Month by volunteering at your local soup kitchen! Paying it forward with a cup of warmth will leave your heart happy and others healthy — a win-win this January.
