International Women’s Health Week: Recognizing Healthy Lifestyle Habits

National Women’s Health Week begins each year on Mother’s Day. It encourages all women to make their health a priority and think about what’s right for their unique lifestyle. Make time for the women in your life and advise them to take a moment to think about their overall mind, body and soul. And, if you’re a woman, start taking care of yourself today for a better community tomorrow. These days are all about you!

Small steps can be taken to lead a positive lifestyle. The first should be making annual checkups with your healthcare provider a priority. Visiting with your doctor regularly about your health concerns is an absolute must for maintaining good health. Being proactive with essential screenings can prevent disease. Pro tip: Check for cervical cancer every three years if you’re over 21.

Physical activity is another way to benefit your overall health. Consider finding an exercise video online, working out with items around your home or making the most of screen time! If you have a treadmill or stationary bike, watch your favorite series while raising your heart rate. Or do jumping jacks during the commercial breaks.

Working out and eating healthy go hand-in-hand. Nutrition is an essential part of a healthy lifestyle. Women specifically need folic acid every day.

With all these steps taken prioritizing your physical health, it’s just as important to keep your mind sharp, too. Research shows that positive mental health is associated with improved health. Make time to unwind, connect with others or recognize when you may need help. If stress gets in the way of your daily activities for several days in a row, talk to an elder or trusted healthcare professional in your community.
