Special Occasion Drinking
Binge drinking can cause a temporary period of afib in the heart. Doctors often refer to this as “holiday heart” since cases increase during the holidays when people are more likely to drink excessively.
Daily Drinking
Evidence shows that persons who drink on a daily basis are more likely to develop afib. A study observed individuals over 14 years and found that a single drink a day increased their risk by 16%, compared to those who did not drink at all.
A. Fib Patients
Alcohol has an instant effect on patients who already have afib. Research found that a single alcoholic drink doubled the chances of a patient experiencing a period of afib.
