3d. 12-Step Programs as Part of Treatment

Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) started in 1935. Since then, numerous 12-step programs have followed including Narcotics Anonymous (NA), Cocaine Anonymous (CA), Crystal Meth Anonymous (CMA) and Pills Anonymous. Twelve-step programs can be used as part of ACT and in TCs.

In a 12-step program, the person with SUD completes each of the 12 steps with a sponsor (an experienced member who guides them in the program). The sponsor is also a resource if the person feels like using a substance.

According to some studies, 12-step programs are an effective part of SUD treatment. However, AA states the program is only one part of treatment, and the user should follow their mental health professional’s plan.
