They use the substance even if it puts them in danger.

They have to take more of the drug to get the desired effect.

They have withdrawal symptoms that can be relieved by using more of the substance.

They have cravings for the substance.

The person becomes unable to manage work and home responsibilities.

The person uses the drug even if it makes physical or mental health worse.

First, challenge the stigma that can come with SUD.
Your loved one has a treatable medical condition. Their entire identity is not SUD.
Find the right words and perspectives to discuss the disorder.
For example, instead of saying someone is an alcoholic, say they experience an alcohol use disorder and are on the road to recovery.
Help them focus on daily health.
Help develop new habits like a healthy diet, exercise routines and new hobbies.
Help them make good choices.
Acting like nothing is wrong and ignoring a problem can make it harder to break the cycle. Encourage spending time with supportive people, rather than those who may hold the person back.
Take advantage of support groups.
Attend Al-Anon or Nar-Anon meetings. These programs support families and friends of those addicted to alcohol or drugs and can help improve your morale.
