HIV, or human immunodeficiency virus, attacks and weakens the body’s immune system.

AIDS, or acquired immune deficiency syndrome, occurs when HIV is not treated properly and advances to stage 3.

Impaired Judgment

  • Alcohol impairs our judgment skills
  • Impaired judgment can lead a person to engage in unsafe sexual behaviors

Delayed Testing

  • A heavy drinker may delay getting tested for HIV
  • If they test positive, they also may delay getting treatment

Missed Medications

  • Infected patients may find it difficult to follow treatment plans and medications if they also abuse alcohol

Increased Damage

  • Alcohol use disorder may worsen HIV-related conditions, such as liver disease
