5d. Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is a disease that decreases bone strength and increases the risk of broken bones. It can affect both older men and women who have gone through menopause.

One standout step to prevent osteoporosis is, you guessed it! Drink in moderation.

Our bones develop up until the age of 35. This is considered when we reach our “peak bone mass.” After that, our bone mass decreases at a quick pace, and the state of our bones in later years fully depends on our habits during our childhood and young adulthood.

Heavy drinking during these important years can have a large impact on bone health in the future:

  • Chronic heavy drinking before 35 can compromise the quality of our bones and increase the risk of osteoporosis
  • The effects of heavy drinking on the bones cannot be reversed, even after a person quits drinking
