5e. Alzheimer’s Disease

We learned in lesson 1 that alcohol abuse can have long-term effects on the brain. Not only does alcohol change the brain’s neuron structures, it can also lead to memory loss and other conditions, such as Alzheimer’s.

1
Heavy drinking over a long period of time can cause damage in the brain.
2
This affects the brain’s ability to send important signals to different regions.
3
This habit of drinking can increase the risk of developing dementia.
4
Research found that heavy drinkers were more likely to develop Alzheimer’s than other types of dementia.

You can learn more about Alzheimer’s and other dementia types, including alcohol-related brain damage (ARBD), in the Dementia & the Brain course.
