There are unique challenges when it comes to treating elders with an SUD. These challenges can arise during diagnosis and continue throughout the treatment process.

Diagnosis
There is a lack of screening methods targeted towards older adults
Providers may confuse symptoms of an SUD with other chronic health conditions or changes from aging
Older adults may have difficulty recognizing behaviors related to their substance use
Support
Physicians may hesitate to confront older patients about substance abuse, because they don’t want to appear disrespectful
Children and family members may have misconceptions or think lightly of the SUD. Misconceptions could include:
Assuming drinking isn’t harmful because the elder can no longer drive
Believing that substance use is fine because they are “the last pleasures” an elder has
Treatment
Specialized treatments tailored to older adults are limited
One survey found that only 18% of treatment programs were designed for older adults
Older adults may be isolated and have difficulty finding transportation to appointments
They may not have the ability to pay for their treatment
