How to Spread Comfort and Joy Amid the Stressful Holiday Season

Stress has the potential to ruin the upcoming holiday season and leave you feeling empty. However, there are ways to combat the winter blues! Being realistic, planning ahead and seeking support can help ward off negativity just in time to spread cheer this month and all the ones following.

There are multiple reasons why someone may find this time of year difficult. The holiday season presents all kinds of demands such as shopping, baking, cooking, cleaning and entertaining. It can be hard to manage everyone’s expectations, and that’s OK. Others may feel alone during this time of year, even in the presence of others. Take time today to reflect on this article and ways you can morph the upcoming week into something uplifting.

Have realistic expectations

Believe it or not: Your holiday gatherings don’t have to be perfect. More often than not, they aren’t anyway. This doesn’t need to warrant stress or disappointment, but rather, an opportunity to embrace new traditions!

Will some family members not be able to join because of the weather? Or travel restrictions? Schedule a Zoom session during dinner or a Facetime over dessert. With today’s technology, connecting with your loved ones online is simple — and completely acceptable!

It’s okay to say “no”

Saying yes when you should say no can leave you feeling overwhelmed. Friends and family members will understand if you can’t participate in every activity this holiday season if your comfort level or state of mental health needs a breather.

Prioritize the events you for sure want to attend, and have a list of back-ups for if you want to add to your calendar. Don’t feel obligated to go to absolutely everything.

Take a breather

Make some time for yourself and do the holiday traditions YOU enjoy. Spending a night alone watching your favorite Thanksgiving or Christmas movie can be the refresh you need in prep for gathering with family or friends.

Never feel bad for doing your own thing! It might be just what you need.

Seek professional help if necessary

Despite your best efforts, you may still find yourself in a hole throughout the holiday season. If that’s the case, don’t hesitate to seek help and talk with a mental health professional on the next steps to take.

Resiliency is key. And we’re proud of you for taking the steps necessary in finding your best self for the upcoming year.
