2a. What Does Your Brain Look Like?

The Big Brain

This is what your brain looks like as a nice scientific model. Your brain is divided into two halves, called the right and left hemispheres. The halves are mirror images of each other, but sometimes control different functions.

If you want to see a more realistic picture of a brain, move the slider. If not, keep scrolling!

If you want to see an actual brain, flip the card It’s from a sheep, not a human.

Warning:

3 Main Brain Sections

Your brain is divided into 3 main parts: the cerebrum, cerebellum and brainstem. Each of the 3 brain sections controls different functions in your body.

Tap or click the turn button to learn more about what each section does. Click the speaker icon to hear how to pronounce the fancy names!

Lobes of the Cerebrum

As you just learned, the cerebrum is truly your ‘big brain’, taking up most of the space in your skull. To help study the big brain, the cerebrum is divided into 4 main lobes.

The Deep Brain

Now, let’s dive even deeper into the brain. The deepest parts of the brain control things like memory, emotion, stress, hunger, thirst and feeling sleepy. We’ll look at 5 parts hidden inside the deepest parts of your brain: the pituitary gland, hypothalamus, amygdala, hippocampus and pineal gland.
