2i. Emotions

During your teens, the parts of your brain (deep brain) that control emotions aren’t fully connected to the part of your brain that makes decisions (frontal lobe). So it’s pretty common to make decisions based on what you feel like doing without really thinking it through. Your emotions can also feel giant and overwhelming. This is because your frontal lobes aren’t kicking in to help bring emotions down to a more manageable size.

Even when you feel like you don’t have control of your decisions or emotions, you actually do! Taking a few deep breaths can kick your frontal lobes back into gear so they can help you regain control. Give it a try!

Fast Fact

Ever feel like adults are always yelling at you even when they swear they aren’t? Good news - if they say they aren’t yelling…they probably aren’t. Bad news…your brain is actually reacting like they ARE yelling at you, so your feelings are totally correct too. Again - a few deep breaths can do wonders!
