Marijuana then and now

Even though it’s still federally illegal in the U.S., marijuana’s popularity has sky-rocketed among adults and youth alike. But just because something is popular, doesn’t mean it’s safe for us. Especially because marijuana has changed a lot in the past few decades.

Synthetic Cannabinoids
  • Marijuana production has changed significantly. Instead of just utilizing the natural cannabis plant, manufacturers have turned to synthetic cannabinoids, or lab-made substances. Synthetic cannabinoids are similar to the compounds found in cannabis, except with a dangerous twist: they contain a much higher concentration of THC and can have life-threatening effects on your health.
THC Potency
  • Studies show that from 1995-2014, the amount of THC in cannabis plants had risen from 4% to 12%. As THC increases, other non-intoxicating compounds like CBD are decreasing. The increased potency also increases the risks of cannabis use, particularly in our youth.
Marijuana in Beverages
  • As marijuana has become legal in many states, it’s no surprise that cannabis-infused drinks are now on the market. While some labels advertise low doses of THC, these aren’t always accurate. The cannabinoids infused in these beverages are made to dissolve in liquid. This means they’re quickly and easily absorbed into the body, resulting in faster effects than if someone ate an edible.

Most people who drink alcohol already understand how they will be affected. With cannabis-infused drinks, the effects can be unpredictable, especially if someone continues drinking before the THC kicks in.
