1a. The Structure of the Brain

Did you know that your brain is the most powerful organ in your body? The brain is your body’s control center and is responsible for important functions including memory, movement, thinking, breathing and digestion.

Let’s take a moment to explore the main structure of the brain. Use the flip cards below to learn more.

Cerebrum

  • The largest section of the brain
  • Composed of the cortex, or “thinking wrinkles”
  • Responsible for processing sights, sounds and smells, the thought process, memories, and controlling movement
Cerebellum

  • Located at the back of the head, underneath the cerebrum
  • Controls coordination and balance
Brainstem

  • Located beneath the cerebrum and in front of the cerebellum
  • Connects the brain to the spinal cord
  • Controls automatic functions, including breathing, digestion, blood pressure and heart rate
Whole Vessel Network

  • Composed of veins, arteries and capillaries
  • Arteries carry blood to the brain with every heartbeat
  • Billions of cells will use 20% of the oxygen and fuel carried in your blood
